Chapter Twelve

The secret spilled into the open. A secret Klementine had done her best to not even think lest he read her mind. Could he read her mind? The stories had been wrong about so many things thus far. Such as the fact vampires were cold, heartless creatures.

She blinked at Frederick. “Excuse me?” She really hoped he didn’t notice the stutter in her heart. Who was she kidding? He could probably smell her blood type.

“Drop the charade. I know you’re Fae.”

For a second longer, she debated lying before shrugging and saying. “Only half.” Which might as well have been none according to her full-blood relatives. Snobbery thrived in her lineage.

“Half explains why your ears are round and you don’t smell like them.” He sounded quite annoyed. “Although I should have known by the ridiculous name.”

“My name is not ridiculous.”

“Really? Let me ask you, when you have children, are you going to name them after fruit? Maybe Pomegranate. Or will you stick to citrus like Orange or Grapefruit?”

“I’m not… That is… It’s spelled with a K.” A weak excuse. While full Fae had lovely, fanciful names, those mixed with human got relegated to animals, plants, and flowers.

“You didn’t answer the question. When you have a child, are you going to saddle them with something ridiculous?”

“Because Frederick is so much better,” she huffed, rolling her eyes. No way was she admitting she spent a good decade when younger with her heart set on naming her first daughter Portulaca.

He arched a brow. “You have a problem with a time-honored name?”

“I do. Frederick is boring and very unsexy. Wasn’t Freddy the name of a frog? Or was it a horse? I don’t think there’s too many heroes going by the name of Fred-er-ick.” She teased the consonants of his name.

For some reason, this curved his lips. “A good thing I’m no hero.”

He certainly wasn’t, and she’d do well to remember that. “No kidding. Vampire.” she said with a sneer she’d been taught, only to feel guilty. Would she really judge him based on what others said or what she’d seen thus far of the man himself?

Which admittedly wasn’t much other than the fact he truly loved his daughter and his staff were extremely loyal.

“Better a vampire than a duplicitous and murderous Fae.”

“We are not murderers!”

“Really? You should tell that to the assassins I deal with on an almost monthly basis. Like today.” He eyed the broken window before grabbing her by the arm and leading her out of the pile of glass.

“What makes you think—”

He cut her off. “I am not arguing with you. The fact of the matter is the Fae have hated me for decades. It’s what I get for refusing to bed one.”

“The Fae don’t hate you because you didn’t beguile one of them but because you drink their blood.”

“Not often. It’s a little too sweet for my taste.”

Her jaw dropped. She couldn’t tell if he was joking or not. “You just admitted to killing us.”

He snorted. “No vampire enjoys drinking from a corpse.
